Suara
Suara is an SATB youth choir, for singers 15 – 21 years old, and was formed in 2008 by Sarah Patterson. The choir is based in Canterbury, and rehearses on Sunday evenings, from 5pm – 6.45pm.
Despite Suara’s relatively short life so far, successes have already been had at the 2008 & 2009 Dandenong Eisteddfods (1st place!) and 2008 Boroondara Eisteddfod (2nd place!). At the 2008 Waverley Eisteddfod, Suara combined with another choir – Harambee – to perform as one large choir. The combined choir gained 1st place in the Open A Cappella Section, as well as the extra “Australian Song Award”. This award goes to the choir who gave the best performance of an Australian work in all of the choral sections of the competition.
Suara had the privilege of working with a cappella expert Deke Sharon (USA) for two weeks in March, and learned so much. It was a fantastic experience!
In October 2008, Suara was a host choir for a visit from the national choir “Gondwana Chorale”, which was a great experience, and included a performance at St Paul's Cathedral.
Suara's repertoire is mainly a cappella music. In 2008, Suara sang a variety of music from Australia, Ireland, Asia, Canada and the US.
As well as being a fantastic musical experience for the singers in Suara, it is a great social experience as well, with wonderful friendships formed and regular social activities.
We are currently auditioning Tenors and Basses for Suara. For more information, or to book an audition time, call Sarah on 0430 073 888, or email melbacappella@gmail.com
We are currently planning our first Suara tour, to the Festival of Voices in Tasmania, July 2010.
